Hey guys & gals,

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted on here so I figured I’d get back in the saddle by posting about one of my favorite things, Twitter. For those not in the know, Twitter is a status-update application. What the hell does that mean? As per their motto, Twitter asks one basic question: What are you doing right now? You’re probably thinking, wow, that’s lame; actually, there’s a lot more to it.

What Twitter can do is allow you to access information at an extremely fast rate. If someone you’re following posts a link or information, you can get it within seconds. With Twitter slowly dipping into the mainstream, it’s no surprise to see so many musicians and entertainment professionals hopping on the bandwagon. As with any Pitchfork article/review, take what they’re saying with a grain of salt.

You can find the article here.

Hello,

So this is my first post on this so I’m not sure what I’m doing. First off my name Is DJ Smilez I am a junior TCOM major here at BG. I have been on WFAL Radio for three years now, My show this semester is every Monday 10p-12a on BG Cable Ch. 21 and www.falconradio.org.

Ok here we go…

1) First of all what is up with all these great hip-hop artists (in my opinion) and these long awaited albums that seem to be taking forever to come out Jay-Z with Blueprint 3, Jadakiss with The Last Kiss (I’m mad they forced him to change it from Kiss My Ass), Dr. Dre with DeTox, Eminem with Relapse, and how about another Outkast album????

2) Second, Because if the big craze with artists having video blogs I have grown accustomed to watching Joe Budden (Remember his track Pump It Up???…circa 2002) and because I like watching Joe Budden TV and his antics, studio sessions with his new group Slaughterhouse (Joe, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5′9, and Crooked I), and his good looking girlfriend Tahiri (check her out fellas lol) I’ve started listening to his mixtape series Mood Muzik and the couple tracks he’s released to be on his Internet Album The Padded Room (Feb. 24) but my problem with him has arisen the last couple days because I thought he was done with beefs when Ransom came at him talking a bunch of nonsense cuz Joe is more popular than him but Saigon Mr. Greatest Never Told that has been held back as much as Dre’s Detox album came at him just cuz Joe used his name in a freestyle that wasn’t meant to diss him. Joe actually took vital time to supply mor emusic and hilarious videos for me as a fan to make two very raw diss osns against Saigon. Now I know I said they were raw but if you were done with beefs why waste your time time with somebody whose album will never come out but as long as he has the great producer Just Blaze in his corner, he will stay somewhat relevant in Hip-hop.

Well that’s pretty much all I have for this week but more will come…

I’m a huge college radio geek, having been on the air at a number of stations over the years, including WBGU. When I arrived in Bowling Green in 1995 I immediately sought out the college radio station because I wanted to stay connected with new music. I moved to Ohio from San Francisco for grad school and was incredibly worried that I’d completely lose touch with the music scene. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

After getting involved with WBGU I actually became much more in touch with music than I had been in San Francisco. For me, WBGU was vital to my cultural survival in Bowling Green. I met interesting music fanatics, band members, and some of the most creative people on campus. It really was a tight-knit community of folks who had radio shows, played in bands, and hit shows at Howard’s to support local music and touring indie bands.

I thought about my time at WBGU when I read some of the comments on an article today about the shut-down of college radio station KTXT in Lubbock, Texas. A commenter made the point that alternative music really didn’t have an audience in small town Texas. I couldn’t disagree more. Small towns need indie media even more than major cities do. So, keep up the great work at WBGU. My stint there from 1995 to 1997 was a fantastic experience and it got me back involved with college radio. I’ve been Djing at other college stations ever since.

With the release of iTunes 8.0.2.20 Apple has introduced its Genius feature. The idea is that you can select a song, turn on the Genius sidebar, and based on several criteria, iTunes will generate a playlist from your library that is “genius.” I’ve heard a lot of good things so far, but wanted to test-drive the feature myself. The following is a review of the service. I will attach the Genius playlist at the end.

About Genius

From the Apple iTunes site:

The new Genius feature in iTunes 8 creates the perfect playlist. Just select a song, click the Genius button, and iTunes generates a playlist of songs from your library that go great with it.

I like the sound of this, but are we looking at a Pandora clone?

Starting Genius

Starting up genius is a bit daunting. If you have a large library, expect a decent wait. *2 hours later* Yep. I’ve finally got Genius up and running. First segue down…not bad at all.

Using Genius

Very simple. To get things started, go to your library, highlight the song you want a playlist created from and push the “Genius Button.” You can determine how many songs you want displayed: 25, 50, 75, or 100.
The sidebar of genius is also easy to understand. It displays “genius recommendations” based on your playlist. From looking at the list, it’s showing a decent line-up of similar artists; nothing too obscure.

FIRST GOOD TRANSITION: Failure - “Magnified” to Amusement Parks on Fire - “Back to Flash”

FIRST BAD TRANSITION: The Dissociatives - “Parais Circa 2007″ to The Dillinger Escape Plan - “The Perfect Design”

FIRST AWKWARD TRANSITION: Nine Inch Nails - “Corona Radiate” to And You Will Know Us… “Worlds Apart”

GENIUS: GOOD OR BAD?

Overall, genius definitely improves the iTunes experience. The simple interface allows for quick access, though, if you have a large library you can expect your first Genius run to take awhile. Focusing on the feature’s purpose, The Perfect Playlist, I’m not 100% sold. While a lot of the songs were similar, it doesn’t seem to “nail it.” However, for something in its first version, Genius is impressive. If you have a bit of freetime, download the latest iTunes and play around with this exciting new feature.

RATING: GOOD (8/10)

THE PLAYLIST:

* Denotes song that started playlist.

1. Failure - Magnified *
2. Amusement Parks on Fire - Back to Flash
3. Cave In - Atraxia
4. The Dissociatives - Paris Circa 2007
5. The Dillinger Escape Plan - The Perfect Design
6. My Bloody Valentie - Loomer
7. Deftones - Pins and Needles
8. Opeth - Closure
9. Deftones - Feiticeira (Live)
10. Nine Inch Nails - Corona Radiata
11. And You Will Knows Us By The Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart
12. Beck - Lazy Flies
13. Failure - Let it Drip
14. Cave In - Dark Driving
15. Jesu - Silver (Original Beats)
16. Silverchair - One Way Mule
17. Metric - The List
18. Explosions in the Sky - Magic Hours
19. The Mars Volta - Concertina
20. Ken Andrews - In Your Way
21. Isis - Backlit
22. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Jesus Christ Pose (Soundgarden Cover)
23. Failure - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode Cover)
24. Cave In - Tension in the Ranks
25. The Dissociatives - Sleep Well Tonight

There you have it. Apple iTunes Genius. I think this thing has a promising future, let’s see where they take it.

Listeners may note that our automated programming is equipped with just as much new holiday material as are our DJs. We’ve got a full month of new music and Christmas cheer for you.
I’ve enjoyed Suburban Sprawl’s annual holiday compilations for a couple years now and today marked the posting of 2008’s 44 track deep free offering.
Here’s a song from Detroit/Cleveland band Kiddo (“Oh Dear”).
And here’s a link so you can download the whole sampler for free.
Happy December, all.
